CEEGerman media offices damaged in Russian attack on Kyiv
The Kyiv office of Deutsche Welle (DW), a German international broadcaster and media outlet, has been damaged in the latest Russian attack on Ukraine, Ukrainska Pravda reports.
Mykola Berdnyk, head of DW's Kyiv bureau, reported that blast waves have caused significant damage to windows and ceilings in the office. No one was injured and the journalists continue to work. "Although Kyiv is increasingly suffering from Russian aerial terror, the motivation of DW journalists working in Ukraine remains unbreakable," Berdnyk said. "The news we received this morning came as a shock and once again demonstrated the conditions in which journalists work to cover events in Ukraine," DW Director General Barbara Massing commented. A studio belonging to ARD, Germany's largest public broadcasting consortium, was also severely damaged in the Russian strike on Kyiv. The ARD studio, located in central Kyiv, sustained serious damage in the large-scale Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine. It was likely partially destroyed by the blast wave, which shattered windows and caused walls to collapse. No staff were present in the studio at the time of the attack. The structural condition of the building is yet to be assessed. Despite the significant damage, the team continues its coverage: program production and live reporting will continue using mobile technical solutions and from alternative locations. "Window frames ripped out, shards of broken glass everywhere, equipment destroyed – seeing your own workplace completely destroyed is a shock. Russian airstrikes have for years been large-scale and merciless and are part of the brutal reality of life in Ukraine," said studio director Vasyl Holod. He added that these Russian strikes have killed thousands of civilians, destroyed hospitals, schools "and premises belonging to some newsrooms". Holod said he has "enormous respect for our team, which is not afraid of this aggression and is fully committed to our mission: to report on what is happening". RELATED
