CEEOwner of Albania's MCN TV reports threats
Endri Meksi, owner of MCN TV, a private television broadcaster in Albania, has publicly claimed to have been the target of at least two incidents of intimidation on 10th and 28th March 2026. According to his statements, one incident involved individuals entering the premises of MCN TV at around 20:00, while another included threats from armed and masked persons. Meksi has stated that these incidents were reported to the police and prosecution authorities and has publicly questioned the adequacy of the institutional response. As of now, there has been no detailed public confirmation from law enforcement or prosecution bodies regarding the incidents or the status of any investigation.
In parallel, Meksi made a public appearance on his own television channel, where he disclosed personal matters, including an extramarital relationship with a colleague at MCN TV. He has claimed that this situation has been used to exert pressure or blackmail against him. These statements, made in a public broadcast setting, have further increased the case’s visibility and added additional dimensions to the initial allegations. The case has also prompted reactions from journalists affiliated with MCN TV, expressed through public posts and statements. In these reactions, journalists have raised concerns about the situation and called for clarification and investigation of the reported incidents. At the same time, competing narratives have emerged across different media outlets and online platforms, including allegations regarding possible links to business or political networks and speculation about potential legal exposure. These claims remain unverified, contributing to a fragmented and polarized information environment where multiple, conflicting accounts circulate without independent confirmation. SafeJournalists Network (SJN) underscores that any allegation of threats or intimidation targeting individuals in the media sector, whether journalists, editors, or media owners, must be taken seriously and investigated promptly, independently, and transparently by the competent authorities. Ensuring an effective institutional response is essential for maintaining public trust and safeguarding the broader media environment. At the same time, the situation unfolds in a complex context in which issues related to personal conduct, media ownership, and editorial practices intersect. The use of media platforms for personal disclosures, as well as the circulation of unverified and competing narratives, raises concerns about professional standards and the integrity of media in Albania.
